Taylor, vendeuse dans une petite ville de l'Ohio, rêve en secret de vivre à Manhattan. Un jour, elle fait la connaissance d'Alyssa, propriétaire d'une luxueuse boutique de prêt-à-porter à New York. Alyssa, séduite par son talent, lui propose de devenir sa nouvelle gérante. Et c'est ainsi que Taylor débarque dans la ville de ses rêves. Hélas, elle déchante rapidement. Le magasin doit faire ses preuves auprès de futurs investisseurs tandis que les vendeuses, Mindy et Courtney, qui estimaient que le poste de Taylor leur revenait, ne se montrent guère accueillantes. Pour couronner le tout, Alyssa impose à Mindy d'accueillir Taylor chez elle, dans son minuscule appartement. Un jour, découragée, Taylor cherche un endroit où déjeuner tranquillement. Et fait ainsi la connaissance de Philip, un séduisant agent immobilier...
